Prof. Dr. Helmut Satzger


Helmut Satzger holds the Chair of German, European and International Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure as well as Business Criminal Law at LMU Munich. He studied law at the University of Passau and King`s College London and spent his legal clerkship in Berlin, Paris and La Paz. His numerous publications cover all fields of criminal law and criminal procedural law. Satzger is the author of two major textbooks and (co-)editor of a commentary on the German Criminal Code as well as several academic journals and book series. He is a member of the Expert Group on EU Criminal Policy and (co-)founder of the European Criminal Policy Initiative (‘ECPI’). Currently, his main research focus lies on the development of a comprehensive “climate criminal law”, including the controversial issues of recognising “the crime of ecocide” and “the climate necessity defence” under (inter-)national criminal law.
